Message from Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Science
Welcome to the USET Department of Economics under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Basically, this department is led by a world-famous economist and personality –Prof. Dr. Moazzem Hossain, honorable chairperson, BoT, USET. All programs of this department are patronized by another famous personality in Bangladesh-Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, a renowned economist, development thinker, and Climate Change expert who is the chairman of PKSF.
The University of Skill Enrichment and Technology (USET) is a University for 21st Century. It has been designed to create a skilled workforce from the technical and vocational education system developing a pathway to higher education for the workforce. The absolute aim is to train the large unemployed young population of the country to turn them into demographic dividend rather than a burden. USET is a Digital University that will fulfill the target goals of vision 2021 and 2041 and participate in the 4th Industrial Revolution to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations. USET is accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and approved by the Ministry of Education, Government of Bangladesh. The USET has been given the approval to run from a campus established at Signboard (Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road).
Established as one of the first four departments of USET in 2019, the Department of Economics is widely considered as one of the top economics departments in Bangladesh. The department is home to 3 full-time faculty members including 1 Ph.D. faculty member who contributes to building well-reputed undergraduate and graduate programs in the country. All faculty members have outstanding academic records in their Masters and Ph.D. degrees from top-ranked Universities world-wide. Faculty members also continue to engage in academic research activities along with their excellent teaching performance.
The availability of diverse expertise of faculty members in the department allows us to offer a variety of courses to accommodate students’ specific interests and needs that will help achieve their career goals, both academic and non-academic. Furthermore, placement of our well-trained graduates in the top-tier Universities in the U.S.A., Canada, U.K. Germany, and Australia for higher studies is a testament to the quality of the programs. It is important to note that our programs are the number one economics programs in Bangladesh.
As a supplement to classroom learning, students have access to the University computer system with statistical packages such as Eviews, Stata, Python, and R that aid their learning. The entire university campus is covered by a WiFi network. It is also under the CCTV surveillance Camera that enhances the security of the campus.
The department takes pride in being student-focused where students are our first priority. The department hosts the Young Economists Forum, which is a vibrant co-curricular student organization and has shown to be one of the best student clubs of the Economics Departments in the country. The club organizes various co-curricular events and invites high-caliber internal and external speakers to present on a variety of topics. Students can also get involved in other student clubs at USET to suit their individual interests.
Both local and international scholars are regularly invited to this platform to deliver their lectures over the ZOOM cloud meeting during the Covid-19 pandemic situation. I would like to cordially invite all of you who are interested in expanding your knowledge and enriching your careers to explore USET –BSS in Economics programs.

- To train students from a managerial leadership perspective to be innovative and entrepreneurial in business/industries and human resources development.
- To produce socially responsible, morally upright and ethical entrepreneurs

The BSS in Economics program emphasizes gaining all-round competence in Economics. Students in this program will have all the necessary skills for jobs in the related fields and the ability to successfully complete higher studies in Economics both in their native country and abroad.
BSS in Economics is a 120-credit hour program spread over a period of 4 years. Credits are divided into General Education, School core, and Free Electives. The general education program is designed to provide students with basic knowledge and general ideas to ensure that they have at least the level of knowledge equivalent to a high school graduate. School core courses are designed so that students can build up their skills and specialize in their respective disciplines. Free elective courses broaden students’ horizon and provide them with the option to pursue higher studies in other areas.

Grading System
Following the UGC guidelines, the grades at the University are indicated in the following manner:

P: Pass
I: Incomplete
W: Withdrawal
Pass/ Fail Option
A student can take maximum 18 (eighteen) credit hours in each semester. A make-up failure of 6 (six) credit hours may be allowed depending on situation and nature of the course/s. Other procedures on pass/ fail option are executed according to the rules and regulations of the University.
Incomplete (I)
An incomplete (I) grade is assigned only when a student has failed to complete one or more requirement/s of the course for unavoidable reasons/ accidental circumstances. This incomplete (I) grade will stay until the student appears in the make-up examination at the first available opportunity. If he/ she fails to appear in the make-up examination, the (I) grade will automatically be converted into (F) grade.
Withdrawal (W)
Withdrawal is assigned to a student who withdraws from the course within the deadline for withdrawal with a ‘W’ grade. A student, who withdraws after this date, will earn the grade based on his performance before his withdrawal. The exception to this rule may be made on medical grounds and on terms and applicable conditions of the University.
GPA Computation
The Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed in the following manner:
